Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about visiting Black Tara, what to expect in a class, and how to begin.

Q:I feel like I can't meditate, can I still come to class?

Yes! We start wherever we are in the moment. Meditation is a skill we learn gently and slowly.

Q:What happens in a class?

Each class includes short guided meditations, a teaching, and a Q&A. You're welcome to sit on a chair or cushion.

Q:Do I have to become a Buddhist to attend?

No. Anyone 18+ can attend — people of all faiths, cultures, and genders are welcome at Black Tara.

Q:How should I dress for class?

No special clothing is required. Come as you are.

Q:Do we need to attend every class or commit to a series?

No. Attend one class or as many as you're able to. No commitment is necessary — each class stands on its own.

Q:Where do class fees go?

Fees go directly toward supporting Black Tara's space, teachers, and ongoing programming in Harlem.

Q:If I'm of another religious faith, can I attend classes?

Yes. Anyone can attend. You can continue practicing your own faith while also benefiting from Tibetan Buddhist meditation — becoming Buddhist isn't required.

Q:Do I have to be a Buddhist to benefit from meditation?

No. Anyone can learn basic meditation and experience its benefits. We welcome and support everyone, regardless of whether they follow another faith or none at all.

Q:Is there a deeper practice track beyond the intro classes?

Yes. Beyond our drop-in practices, students may inquire about opportunities to take refuge, then receive various initiations/empowerments when ready.
